Common childhood complaints.

Sore throats and tonsillitis.

Many children suffer from sore throats. Frequently these sore throats accompany a cold, earache, respiratory infections or flu. At the start of the bout of tonsillitis may be fever, lethargy, loss of appetite, painful throat. The tonsils themselves are red, swell, with white patches or pocket of pus.

The standard medical treatment for tonsillitis is a course of antibiotics. While this may relieve the immediate symptoms, the infection have been suppressed and frequently returns. I have been told by many sufferers that they have found taking antibiotics makes little difference to the speed of their recovery.

With homeopathic remedies the infection can be helped enormously. However, if your child has been given repeated antibiotics for sore throats, it may take a few days, even with homeopathic remedies, for the tonsillitis to clear.

Recurrent tonsillitis is one of the most common reasons that parents brings their children to see a Homeopath. The remedies to help the child with the symptoms of tonsillitis will be prescribed, then the constitutional treatment to lessen their susceptibility to this infection will be given. Many children with recurrent tonsillitis will also have enlarged tonsils and adenoids, making them more vulnerable to infections. Constitutional treatment can help here too.

Self-helped measures:

  • Give warm soothing drinks with lemon or honey.
  • If your child is old enough, encourage them to gargle to relieve discomfort. Warm water with a few drops of Calendula or Echinacea tincture.
  • Chop an onion and mix it with a couple of dessert spoons of honey and leave for half an hour. Then drain the liquid, that has formed. Give a tea spoon 3-6 times a day.
